Betsy Salvador Doula, newborn care specialist, mother, USA

Tell us about yourself - who are you?

I’m Betsy Salvador. I work as a hybrid Newborn Care Specialist. But my most important jobs are being a helpmeet to my husband and mother to our children.

I grew up in East Lansing near Michigan State University. It was an amazing experience growing up in such a diverse college town. My husband and I lived in Lansing and we moved to Florida when I was 23.

We have lived in the same house in Southwest Florida for 24 years. It’s my most favorite place! Not as small of a town as it used to be, but it’s quaint and has so many beaches. We live 8 minutes from a beach and can hear the waves occasionally at night.

What are some defining moments in your life?

There are so many defining moments and experiences in life. It’s difficult to choose, but the three that first come to my mind are: my salvation and being renewed through Christ. It’s given me a brand new perspective and purpose. Second is becoming a mother through adopting and giving birth to five children. This is like having your heart walking around outside of your body every day. Third would be attending births and supporting families postpartum. These women have amazed me with their particular strengths and kindly made me aware of my own innate gifts.

Who are three influential women in your life?

I must begin with my mom. She is my present. Her cells are within me, her genetics, her exemplary characteristics, and her flaws. She was by my side during those very formative years and loves me unconditionally. My mother-in-law has been there for my years of marriage. She has been a rock to lean on and also loves me unconditionally.

My daughters have broadened me and encouraged growth. I learn from them daily and hope to continue thriving alongside them for many years to come.

My dear friend and sister in Christ. We moved to Florida without any relatives or support system. It was a blessing to meet this marvelous woman as we were growing our family and began homeschooling. She has loved our children as her own and has become a part of our family.

What does “womanhood” mean for you?

Womanhood is the uniqueness of being created a female. “Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Genesis 2:23

We possess “unique, special capacities both physically, mentally, and emotionally that are different from men.” It’s a privilege to embody the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. Gentleness is strength with a soft touch. What a lovely representation of a woman’s special femininity that is displayed in the various roles we live out daily.
